California prep baseball team forced to forfeit playoff win because of Wiffle Ball practice

  • On Tuesday in California, the Peninsula High baseball team beat Santa Monica, 7-2, in the Southern Section Division 3 tournament. That result has been deemed null and void, though, because of a few Wiffle Ball tosses, and now Santa Monica is advancing to the next round. It’s as dumb as it sounds. League rules say no batting practice is allowed on the day of a playoff game, though soft-toss—when a player/coach kneels and underhands the ball to the hitter—is allowed. Hitting off a tee and the game of pepper are also allowed on the day of the game.Peninsula coach John Hangartner apparently assumed that meant the kneeing part of the soft-toss exclusion was key, so before the game he had his players throw Wiffle Balls to the hitters, from their knees, for about 10 to 12 minutes before the game. That was a no-no. Because they were throwing the ball overhand, it violated the rule. The Santa Monica coaches saw what was going on—there was no attempt by Peninsula to do this in secret—and filmed the Wiffle Ball session. They said nothing and played the game. Peninsula won by five runs, and that moved the Santa Monica coaches into action. They turned the video into the league office, and the league office ruled that Peninsula had to forfeit the game.Seriously.“They filmed us throwing/hitting wiffle balls to each other, and as a team we’re shocked that this happened,” Peninsula senior Ed Haus told the Daily Breeze. “We can’t believe their coach would blame a five-run game on us h[......]
